I was very interested in the editorial entitled,
“Historian exposed as Vietnam Phony.”
My intuition coaxed me into forming an opinion about the
heretofore-distinguished historian named Joseph J. Ellis.
My conscience told me that it would be irresponsible and
prejudicial to form an opinion without first doing the research to
substantiate my opinion. Joseph J. Ellis is a history professor and author of
many distinguished history books. He
is also an admitted fabricator of facts and teller or tall tales.
He has spend the last couple of decades lecturing these tall tales
of his fictional military experiences to naïve college students who are
thirsty for knowledge and awestruck by all the fancy letters following
Ellis’ name. To these students, Ellis’ utterances are gospel.
For goodness sake, the man has a Pulitzer Prize, he must be telling
the truth. They were all too
impressed by his resume to question his facts. Ellis immediately reminded me of a certain Rhodes
scholar but I was determined to remain objective and gather the facts. I found that Joseph J. Ellis is a history teacher at
Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. A quick perusing of Ellis’ biographical profile, curriculum
vitae, designations and affiliations, corroborated what my intuition had
been screaming in my ear. Joseph
J. Ellis is a proud, card-carrying member of the Democrat Party. If he were a Republican the press would be feeding
him into the new Troy-Bilt 400HP Chipper/Shedder.
He would be mulch. But
as a Democrat he is in good shape. Undoubtedly, the recent revelations of his disregard
for the truth are just what were needed to catapult him to a God-like
status within his party. At the risk of making a certain Editor’s teeth chatter, I cannot help but point out the obvious. Ellis is now eligible to be a guest speaker in Ralph Brax’s history class.
