Historical Documents Teach Rights

I was proud to see the AV Press print a copy of the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July.  I always enjoy reading these patriotic historical documents.  After re-reading that document I was inspired to also re-read the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I recommend that all Americans read and re-read these documents every so often in order to remind them of what their rights are and are not.

Since most of our information comes from a liberally slanted media, many people tend to believe we have the right to a plethora of entitlements and rights.

It is most interesting what is not in the Bill of Rights.

Nowhere does it state that you have the right to free housing and food.  While Americans are probably the most charitable people on earth, and will gladly help those truly in need of help, they are not bound by law to subsidize generation after generation of professional couch potatoes.

You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone - not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc., but the Constitution and subsequent amendments were not written to protect your feelings.

You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to pursue happiness - which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an overabundance of idiotic laws created by those who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

I did find a document that liberals would love called the “Communist Manifesto.”  It advocates the demonization of the wealthy, free stuff for everyone, and heavy graduated income taxes.  Maybe I’ll send a copy to Senator Tom Daschle.
